01 — The Conference
About MLRITMUN
MLRITMUN is the Model United Nations conference hosted by MLR Institute of Technology — three days of simulated diplomacy in which students take the floor as delegates of nations and negotiate their way through the issues shaping our world.
A Model United Nations is a structured simulation of the United Nations and its bodies. Delegates are assigned a country, research its position, and then debate, caucus, draft and vote exactly as diplomats do — bound by rules of procedure and by the interests of the state they represent.
For a student, that is a rare kind of practice. You leave having argued a position that is not your own, having built consensus with people who came to disagree with you, and having written policy under a deadline. Research, negotiation, public speaking and leadership are not modules here; they are the only way through the committee.

Why MLRITMUN
Three days in committee tend to teach a handful of things faster than a semester does.

Diplomacy
Argue a position that is not your own, and hold it under pressure. Delegates learn to separate the person from the policy.

Public Speaking
A ninety-second speech to a full committee is a different skill from a classroom presentation. You get many chances to sharpen it.

Research
Every claim on the floor must be defensible. Preparation means treaties, reports and voting records — not a search result.

Negotiation
Resolutions pass because blocs form. Finding the clause that two opposed delegations can both sign is the real work of committee.

Leadership
No one is appointed to lead a bloc. Delegates who draft well, listen well and keep a room moving end up leading it.

Networking
Three days in committee with students from across institutions — and a set of contacts that tends to outlast the conference.
